BOCES Carpentry and Residential Construction Program Coming to MHS

Posted Date: 5/23/24 (12:34 PM)

Dear 10th & 11th Grade Families,

I want to alert parents to a unique opportunity that will be available to our students beginning next school year.  We recently renovated our STEM Wing to support our thriving courses such as Welding, Small Engine Repair, Principles of Engineering, Electricity, Robotics, Design and Drawing, as well as others. These renovations will also allow us to offer an onsite Technical BOCES program in the fall.  Typically our students have to attend the Riverhead BOCES site to participate in any of their Tech programs.

Carpentry and Residential Construction is a popular BOCES program.  MHS in conjunction with BOCES has secured an instructor and will be offering a satellite section of this program this fall.  This will be an afternoon program, running periods 6 through 9.  MHS students who enroll in this program will attend MHS classes in the morning, then walk out to the STEM wing for the BOCES program.  Students who participate in the program will also receive 2 total credits for Math and/or English for two years enrollment.

Students in this program will become familiar with the tools used in commercial construction.  Over the course of a two year program, students will participate in numerous hands-on projects.  Students will also have the opportunity to earn eligibility toward a five-year apprenticeship with the Empire State Regional Council of Carpenters Apprenticeship Program.

If this program sounds interesting to your child, I encourage you to contact your child’s guidance counselor for enrollment information.
