High School students Link Academics and Service for Self-Care Awareness Month
In recognition of September being Self-Care Awareness Month, the executive board members of the high school’s National Honor Society — Fiona Dunn, Kaitlyn Garrett and Brooke Walling — led the way by organizing a Self-Care Kit Project. Through the collaborative efforts of NHS members, 11 self-care kits were donated to the local food pantry to support individuals and families in need.
Students in Algebra II classes were also learning how to factor perfect cubes using “SOAP,” a mnemonic device to “clean up” the signs in polynomial factoring. In a creative extension of this lesson, the class contributed bars of soap to complement the self-care kits, connecting their classroom learning to community service.
This project highlights the dedication of Mattituck students to both their education and their community. Their ability to turn academic lessons into meaningful acts of service reflects the leadership, compassion, and character for which the district is so proud.
