About the Community: The Mattituck-Cutchogue School District is located on Long Island’s beautiful North Fork, approximately 90 miles from New York City. The District is bordered on the north by the Long Island Sound and to the south by the Peconic Bay. Its communities remain refreshingly rural in nature with the quaintness of New England. The year-round population of the three communities, which includes Laurel, served by the School District is approximately 8200 (according to the 2000 Census). A resort area, the population swells significantly in the summer and on weekends in the spring and fall. Current enrollment is approximately 1580 students in grades K-12. These students are educated in three schools. There are approximately 152 teachers on staff as well as 90 support staff which include, Secretaries, Teacher Assistants, Custodians, Bus Drivers, and Health Aides. The District offers a full range of educational opportunities including Advance Placement courses and special education classes. As a component district of the Board of Cooperative Education Services, the occupational education and the most fragile of the special education needs are met through this extension of the District. A host of student activities are provided in music, athletics, clubs, and services.
A significant number of residents are employed in major industries throughout Suffolk County. The diversity of these companies has provided a stability to the economy. The North Fork offers an exceptional quality of life. The community takes great pride in its schools and has consistently demonstrated support.
