Late Spring 2009 On behalf of the Board of Education I wish to thank the residents of the Mattituck-Cutchogue –Laurel communities for supporting the children of the District by passing the budget for the 2009 – 2010 school year. Your support will allow the District to maintain all academic and extra- curricular programs, continue to upgrade our technology infrastructure and maintain capital repairs needed at all three buildings. The greatest challenge to our District is sustainability, how to provide a quality educational experience for our students at an affordable cost to our taxpayers. An on-going goal for members of the Board of Education and administration will be to continue to lobby our State legislators to secure “fair and equitable” funding for our school district; this is not the case under the present state aid formula for NYS.
Special notes and acknowledgements:
There are 126 members in this year’s graduation class. Receiving top honors in the Class of 2009 is Valedictorian Nicholas Piacente. He is graduating with a GPA of 98.416 and will be attending Princeton in the fall. Salutatorian Angela Smith is graduating with a 96.348 GPA and will be attending American University next year.
The District congratulates three employees on their retirements this June.
Elementary science teacher Peggy Dickerson - 32 years
Athletic Director and long-time physical education teacher Michael Huey - 32 ½ years
Transportation Supervisor Helen Fox - 25 years as a bus driver and 12 years as Transportation Supervisor
While there are many accolades that could be acknowledged at this time of the year, one in particular is worthy of special note. The Southold- Mattituck-Greenport NJROTC has been designated a distinguished unit in the Northeast for a number of years. However, it is now ranked 3rd out of 624 NJROTC Units on an international ranking system based on academic scholarship, community service, drill team competition and cadet leadership. Congratulations to Major William Grigonis, Senior Chief Charles Turner and Naval Science Instructor Fleicity Turner and all the cadets on a job well done! The banner hanging off the portico of the high school reads “Our Kids – Our School – Our Community.” As the school year winds down, let me take this opportunity to thank all the parents and community residents who have supported our students in grades K- 12 in their efforts throughout the year. Together, you have “made a difference” in their lives.
